The Five Yellow comes from the flying star chart, while the Grand Duke, the Year Breaker and the Three Killings come from the year's earthly branch. The two systems are worked out separately, so in some years they stack on the same direction. Sit with the Grand Duke behind you but never face it; face the Three Killings but never sit with them behind you. None of the four takes renovation or drilling.
Annual Feng Shui layouts only need to be set up once based on the Annual Flying Star chart, with no need to alter the arrangement throughout the year; Monthly Flying Stars are used specifically for timing renovation work. When the Monthly Five Yellow or Two Black stars overlap with the annual inauspicious or illness sectors, strictly avoid ground-breaking, renovation, hammering, or drilling in that direction for that month. Months turn at the solar terms, not on the first day of the lunar month.

When the sign of your birth year shares, clashes with, punishes, harms or breaks the branch of 2029, the Year of the Rooster, folk practice calls it offending the Grand Duke (Fan Tai Sui); a harmony is called He Tai Sui. It sets one branch against another and nothing more; how the year treats you personally takes your full Four Pillars.
The central star drops by one each year, and after one it returns to nine.
