Heavenly Stems

The Heavenly Stems are a set of ten symbols that cycle through Chinese calendrical and metaphysical systems. In BaZi, each Stem carries one of the Five Elements in either Yang or Yin polarity, producing ten distinct energy signatures. The Heavenly Stem of your birth day is your Day Master, the central character in your BaZi chart.

The Ten Heavenly Stems

Jia (Yang Wood) is the tall tree. Upright and pioneering, it leads by example and thrives in positions of authority.

Yi (Yin Wood) is the vine or flower. Flexible and graceful, it grows around obstacles rather than confronting them.

Bing (Yang Fire) is the sun. Radiant and generous, it illuminates everything equally and draws people in naturally.

Ding (Yin Fire) is the candle flame. Focused and quietly intense, it is selective in warmth and attention.

Wu (Yang Earth) is the mountain. Stable and trustworthy, it provides a solid foundation for others to build upon.

Ji (Yin Earth) is the garden soil. Nurturing and receptive, it supports growth and transforms what it receives.

Geng (Yang Metal) is the sword or axe. Decisive and direct, it cuts through complexity with clarity.

Xin (Yin Metal) is the jewel or needle. Refined and principled, it values precision and integrity.

Ren (Yang Water) is the ocean or river. Expansive and adventurous, it flows with force toward the widest possible path.

Gui (Yin Water) is the dewdrop or rain. Intuitive and perceptive, it nourishes subtly and penetrates without force.

Stems as the Visible Layer

Each of the four pillars in a BaZi chart has a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. The Stems represent the visible, outward expression of energy: what others can see and what you project to the world. The Branches, by contrast, contain hidden Stems that reveal deeper forces at work beneath the surface.

Stems and the Day Master

Your Day Master, the Stem of your birth day, is the reference point for all BaZi analysis. Every other Stem and Branch in your chart is evaluated through its relationship to this single character. This process generates the Ten Gods, which describe your personality dynamics, career aptitude, and relationship patterns.

Stems and the Five Elements

The ten Stems are the Five Elements expressed in two polarities: Yang (active, outward) and Yin (receptive, inward). Understanding Stems means understanding how each element behaves in its two modes. Yang Wood (Jia) is a rigid oak tree, while Yin Wood (Yi) is a flexible vine. Same element, very different personalities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Heavenly Stems different from Earthly Branches?

Heavenly Stems are 10 symbols representing outward, visible energy. Earthly Branches are 12 symbols representing hidden, layered energy. Each Branch contains 1 to 3 hidden Stems within it. Together, they form the complete BaZi chart.

Why are there exactly ten Stems?

Ten comes from Five Elements multiplied by two polarities (Yang and Yin). Each element manifests in both a Yang (outward, active) and Yin (inward, receptive) form, creating ten distinct energies with different personality expressions.

Which Heavenly Stem is the most important in a chart?

Your Day Master, the Heavenly Stem of your birth day. It defines your core identity and serves as the reference point for analyzing all other elements, Ten Gods relationships, and timing through Major Cycles and Annual Fortune.
