How much of one Ten God counts as a lot?

Rather than work out a percentage, group the Ten Gods into five families: Peers, Output, Wealth, Officer and Killings, and Seal. Count how many of the four branches' main qi one family fills, then check whether it is also revealed and rooted. The more branches it fills, and the more it is revealed and rooted, the heavier it weighs in your chart.

Which family members do the Ten Gods stand for?

The Six Relations (Liu Qin) are a traditional way of matching the Ten Gods to family and partners. Read the same way for men and women, Seal is elders and people who look after you, Peers are siblings and peers, Output is children and your work, and Wealth and Officer and Killings are partners and relationships. Classical schools do not agree on this, and Ditian Sui Chanwei treats Output as children. The Ten Gods only describe tendencies. The real reading depends on your whole chart, and your own choices also shape the outcome.

What if one Ten God appears a lot in my chart?

First see whether it is favorable or unfavorable for you. Say Officer and Killings is heavy: a strong Day Master may use it as its favorable element, while a weak one usually leans on Seal or Peers to ease it. Some books call such charts a Seven Killings structure or a Direct Officer structure. We judge by strength instead and do not use structures.

What Are the Ten Gods? Five Relations, Each Split in Two

The Ten Gods are the ways every other stem relates to you: five kinds of relation, each split in two by yin and yang. BaZi uses your Day Master to stand for you. It is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born.

There are ten Heavenly Stems. Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng and Ren are yang, and the other five are yin.

Compare any other stem with your Day Master in the Five Elements, and only five results are possible. It feeds you, you feed it, it controls you, you control it, or it shares your element. Say you are Jia Wood and meet Geng Metal. Metal controls wood, and both are yang, so Geng is your Seven Killings (Qi Sha).

For Wealth, Officer and Seal, a stem with the same yin-yang polarity as yours counts as indirect, and one with the opposite polarity counts as direct. That is why Seven Killings is also called Indirect Officer.

Ten Gods in the Branches: Read the Hidden Stems

An Earthly Branch takes its Ten God from the stems hidden inside it. The branches are the characters at the bottom of each pillar, such as Zi, Chou and Yin.

Each branch holds one to three hidden stems (Cang Gan). The strongest is the main qi, followed by the middle qi and the residual qi.

For example, when a Jia Day Master meets Si, Si holds three stems, and each is a different Ten God for Jia.

A branch counts mainly by its main qi. So for Jia, Si is mostly Eating God, with a little Seven Killings and Indirect Wealth.

How to Read the Ten Gods: Roots First, Then Strength

First see how much strength a Ten God has, then whether it helps you or weighs on you. You can work through five steps:

Write down the Ten God of each of the four stems and of each branch's main qi.
See which ones are revealed and rooted. Revealed means it shows up as a stem. Rooted means the same element is also hidden in a branch. One that is both carries more weight.
Judge your Day Master strength. If Peers and Seal fill three or more of the four branches' main qi, you are strong. Two means leaning strong, close to balance, and one or none means weak.
Find your favorable elements, the Ten Gods that help you. A strong Day Master tends to favor Officer and Killings, Output and Wealth. A weak one tends to favor Seal and Peers.
Then look at how the Ten Gods act on each other, such as Eating God feeding Wealth, Officer feeding Seal, or Hurting Officer meeting Officer. Whether a pairing is good still comes back to your strength.

How Do the Ten Gods Feed and Control Each Other?

The Ten Gods feed and control each other the same way their elements do. For a Jia Wood Day Master, water is Seal and wood is Peers. Water feeds wood, so Seal feeds Peers.

Each family feeds the next one around the cycle and controls the one after that.
