Which Years Are Horse Years?
People born in 1990, 2002, 2014 and 2026 are Horses. Earlier Horse years are 1942, 1954, 1966 and 1978. The Horse comes around every 12 years.
A Horse year begins at the Start of Spring (Lichun), around February 4. It is usually a different day from Chinese New Year.
BaZi writes your birth year, month, day and hour as two characters each. The two for the year are your year pillar.
Enter your birth date and hour in the free BaZi calculator. If the second character of your year pillar is 午 (Wu), you are a Horse. If you were born around February 4, be sure to enter your birth hour.

Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth Horses: How Are They Sorted?
The five kinds of Horse are sorted by the heavenly stem of the birth year. Every Horse year's pillar ends in Wu. What differs is the first character, the stem. Each stem belongs to one element.
For example, 2026 is Bing Wu. Bing is Fire, so 2026 is a Fire Horse.
Some sites sort Horses by Na Yin instead. Na Yin is a second set of element names, one for each stem and branch pair.
For 2014, the Na Yin is Gold in the Sand, so those sites call it a Metal Horse. By its stem, it is a Wood Horse.
| Type | Year pillar | Birth years | Na Yin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal Horse | Geng Wu | 1990 | Earth by the Roadside |
| Wood Horse | Jia Wu | 1954, 2014 | Gold in the Sand |
| Water Horse | Ren Wu | 1942, 2002 | Willow Wood |
| Fire Horse | Bing Wu | 1966, 2026 | Heavenly River Water |
| Earth Horse | Wu Wu | 1978 | Heavenly Fire |
What Does the Horse Face This Year? Your Own Year and Self-Punishment
Whether you "offend" Tai Sui this year depends on how the year's animal gets on with the Horse. Tai Sui is the branch in charge of the year. In a Horse year, for example, Tai Sui is Wu. The current year is called the annual fortune (Liu Nian).
For a Horse, the twelve-year cycle runs like this:
- HorseYour own year and punishment
- RatClash
- OxHarm
- RabbitBreak
- Tiger, Goat and DogHarmony
A Horse year is your own year (Ben Ming Nian). It tends to amplify your ups and downs, but it is not a bad year by default. Wu meeting Wu is also a self-punishment, so the year counts as punishment too.
Tradition weighs your own year and a clash the most. Punishment, harm and break are lighter, and harmony is seen as a help.
Offending Tai Sui compares two animals only. It is not a full forecast for your year. For each animal's Tai Sui outlook and tips for the year, see the CNY BaZi Fortune Guide.
Which Animals Match the Horse?
The Horse matches best with the Tiger, Dog and Goat, which folk tradition calls your allies. They form a trine or a six harmony with the Horse.
- TrineThree earthly branches form a group. For the Horse, the other two are the Tiger and the Dog.
- Six HarmonyTwo branches form a pair. The Horse pairs with the Goat.
A trine is complete only when all three meet. Wu sits in the middle of the group, so the Tiger and the Dog each bond with the Horse even when only two meet.
Which Animals Clash with the Horse?
The Rat is the Horse's worst match. Friction with the Ox and Rabbit is lighter. Clash, harm and break all make a poor match, but some weigh more than others.
- ClashSet the twelve animals in a circle, and the two directly opposite collide. This is the heavier kind.
- HarmEach gets in the other's way. The Ox forms a six harmony with the Rat, and the Rat clashes with the Horse, so the Ox harms the Horse.
- BreakA minor loss.
| Animal | Branch | Relation | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rat | Zi | Clash | Heavier |
| Ox | Chou | Harm | Lighter |
| Rabbit | Mao | Break | Lighter |
Horse Personality: Warm, Direct and Restless
Horses tend to be warm, direct and restless. The idea comes from Wu's season. The Wu month runs from about early June to early July. It holds the summer solstice, when Fire is at its peak.
So tradition says a Horse wears its feelings on its face, and when it likes you, it means it. You may love freedom and movement. You shine when something needs a sprint or a lift in the room.
The other side is enthusiasm that fades fast. You start quickly and tire quickly. When patience runs short, things are more likely to be left half done.
Same Horse Year, Different Month, Day and Hour
Horses born in the same year differ in their month, day and hour pillars. Your animal is only the branch of your year pillar, one character in your BaZi.
The character that stands for you is the Day Master, the stem of the day you were born. Your temperament and way of working are read from it, together with the strength of the Five Elements.
Whether a year helps or strains you depends on how its stem and branch relate to your whole chart.
