Da Xian (Decade Cycles)

The 10-year major cycles, called Da Xian, are Ziwei Doushu's decade-level timing system. A chart is not static: every ten years the focus moves to the next palace, which becomes the cycle Life Palace for that decade, and all twelve palaces re-derive around it. Reading the Da Xian is how the natal chart's patterns get placed on a timeline.

What Da Xian Is

The natal chart describes your inborn patterns; the Da Xian describes which decade activates them. Each cycle takes one palace as the cycle Life Palace and governs roughly ten years. The palaces rotate in sequence, so a full lifetime passes through most of the twelve. Once the cycle Life Palace is set, the cycle Career Palace, cycle Wealth Palace, and the rest re-derive from it, and that decade's career and financial themes are read from this new layout.

When Your First Cycle Begins

The starting age comes from the Five Element Bureau (Wu Xing Ju) of your chart: Water-2 Bureau starts the first cycle at nominal age 2, Wood-3 at 3, Metal-4 at 4, Earth-5 at 5, and Fire-6 at 6. The Bureau is derived from the Stem-Branch of your Life Palace, so the starting age differs from person to person. Direction depends on gender and year polarity: yang-year males and yin-year females move forward through the palaces, while yin-year males and yang-year females move in reverse. A Water-2 chart moving forward, for example, runs its first cycle from ages 2 to 11 and its second from 12 to 21.

Decade Transformations: The Cycle's Switches

Each cycle's Life Palace stem triggers a fresh set of Four Transformations layered on top of the natal ones. A palace holding natal Hua Lu can be struck by a cycle Hua Ji, turning a smooth domain into one that demands caution for that decade, and vice versa. Judging a cycle means reading how these two layers of transformations stack across the twelve palaces.

Da Xian vs BaZi Major Cycles

The Da Xian and the Major Cycles (Da Yun) of BaZi share the same concept, a 10-year luck period, but the math is entirely different. BaZi derives its cycles from the month pillar sequence and sets the onset age by distance to the surrounding solar terms; Ziwei Doushu rotates palaces and sets the onset age by the Five Element Bureau. The two systems' verdicts on the same decade can cross-validate each other.

Layered Timing: Decade and Year

The Da Xian sets the decade's direction, and Annual Fortune marks the rises and dips of each year within it. In practice, read the cycle first to set the tone, then the year to time events. Frequently Asked Questions

At what age does the first Da Xian begin?

It depends on your chart's Five Element Bureau: Water-2 starts at nominal age 2, Wood-3 at 3, Metal-4 at 4, Earth-5 at 5, Fire-6 at 6. Each subsequent cycle begins ten years after the previous one.

Is Da Xian the same as the BaZi Major Cycle (Da Yun)?

The concept is the same, a 10-year luck period, but the derivation differs. BaZi cycles come from the month pillar and solar terms; Ziwei Doushu cycles come from palace rotation and the Five Element Bureau. Their starting ages usually differ too.

Can I calculate my 10-year cycles for free?

Yes. A free online Ziwei Doushu calculator lists every decade cycle and annual fortune through age 90 after you enter your birth data, and shows which cycle you are currently in.
