Ziwei Doushu reads timing in four layers: the natal chart is the foundation, Da Xian decade cycles govern ten-year phases, Annual Fortune governs the year, and Monthly Fortune divides that year into twelve lunar months. If the decade is the climate and the year is the weather, the month is the day-to-day rhythm. Within the same year, some months favor pushing forward and others favor holding still, and that difference is written in the Monthly Fortune.

How Months Are Plotted: the Dou Jun Anchor

Plotting Monthly Fortune starts with finding Dou Jun, the month anchor. From the palace holding the year's Earthly Branch, count backward one palace per month down to your lunar birth month; from the palace where you stop, count forward one palace per hour-branch up to your birth hour. The palace you land on is the year's Dou Jun, the Life Palace of lunar month one. Month two, month three, and the rest then advance one palace at a time, so twelve months sweep the full circle of twelve palaces. Because the formula uses your birth month and birth hour, the starting palace is personal: people born in different months or hours begin the same year in different palaces. Monthly Four Transformations: the Fourth Layer

Each lunar month carries its own Stem-Branch pair, and the month's Heavenly Stem activates a new set of Four Transformations (Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji) that stacks on the natal, decade, and annual sets as a fourth layer. This fourth set is the main factor that separates a good month from a bad one. Hua Lu or Hua Quan landing in the Life, Wealth, or Career Palace lifts that domain for the month; the monthly Hua Ji landing in the Life Palace, or striking it from the opposite palace, puts the whole month under pressure. When several layers converge on the same palace, the effect compounds, and those are typically the months when the year's promised events actually happen. Schools differ on how the monthly stem is derived: most generate month stems with the Five Tigers formula, while some fly transformations directly from the palace stem. Month Boundaries: Lunar Months and Leap Months

Ziwei Doushu months follow the lunar calendar: each Monthly Fortune runs from the first day of the lunar month to its last, unlike BaZi, which switches months at solar terms. In a leap-month year, the prevailing convention folds the first half of the leap month into the same-numbered month and hands the second half to the next: days 1–15 of a leap sixth month still count as month six, while day 16 onward counts as month seven.

Monthly Fortune never overrides the year. It fluctuates within the year's baseline. In a favorable year, a rough month is a brief headwind; in a difficult year, a good month is a window to breathe and reposition, not a green light for aggressive moves. The reading order is always the same: establish the decade, then the year, and only then use the month to pick the moment to act.
