The starting age of your first Major Cycle varies. It can begin anywhere from birth to age 9, depending on your birth date, gender, and the relationship between your birth month and the surrounding solar terms. This calculation uses the solar calendar and is one of the first steps in a BaZi reading. An early onset means you enter active cycles sooner. A later onset means your formative years are governed more by natal chart energy alone.
Worked Example: Calculating the Onset Age
Take a birth on 15 June 1990 at 10:00 AM: a Geng-Wu year with a Ren-Wu month pillar. Geng is a yang stem, so a male chart counts forward to the next monthly solar term (jie), Minor Heat on 7 July (the mid-term Summer Solstice is skipped): about 22 days. Every 3 days converts to one year and each leftover day to four months, so onset lands at about 7 years 4 months, with the first cycle Gui-Wei (one step forward from the month pillar) entered in late 1997. A female chart born at the same moment counts backward to the previous jie, Grain in Ear on 6 June: 9 days, so onset at age 3, with cycles running in reverse starting from Xin-Si. Same birthday, opposite directions and different onset ages. That is why fixing yin-yang polarity and direction is the first step of plotting Major Cycles.
