What Is Indirect Seal, and How Do You Find It in Your Chart?
Indirect Seal is the part of your chart that stands for intuition, deep expertise and learning off the beaten path. BaZi uses your Day Master to stand for you. It is the stem of the day you were born.
In the Five Elements, one element feeds the next. The element that feeds you is called Seal. If its polarity matches yours, it is Indirect Seal; if it is opposite, it is Direct Seal.
For example, wood feeds fire. If you are Bing, which is yang fire, then yang wood is your Indirect Seal and yin wood is your Direct Seal.
Finding your own takes two steps:
- Enter your birth date and time in the free BaZi calculator to get your Four Pillars. The stem at the top of the day pillar is your Day Master.
- Find your Indirect Seal in the table of the ten stems. If that stem sits on top of your year, month or hour pillar, you have one. It also counts when it is hidden inside a branch.

Which Stem Is the Indirect Seal for Each Day Master, Jia to Gui?
Each of the ten day stems has exactly one, so find your row in the table. It is one of the Ten Gods, the ten ways you relate to every other stem and branch.
Each branch also holds hidden stems, and the strongest one is its main qi. If your chart has a branch from the last column, this star shows more clearly.
| Day Master | Indirect Seal | Branches whose main qi is the Indirect Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Yang Wood (Jia) | Yang Water (Ren) | Hai |
| Yin Wood (Yi) | Yin Water (Gui) | Zi |
| Yang Fire (Bing) | Yang Wood (Jia) | Yin |
| Yin Fire (Ding) | Yin Wood (Yi) | Mao |
| Yang Earth (Wu) | Yang Fire (Bing) | Si |
| Yin Earth (Ji) | Yin Fire (Ding) | Wu |
| Yang Metal (Geng) | Yang Earth (Wu) | Chen, Xu |
| Yin Metal (Xin) | Yin Earth (Ji) | Chou, Wei |
| Yang Water (Ren) | Yang Metal (Geng) | Shen |
| Yin Water (Gui) | Yin Metal (Xin) | You |
Why Is Indirect Seal Called the Owl God?
Owl God (Xiao Shen) is simply another name for Indirect Seal, not a separate star of its own. The classic Yuanhai Ziping lists it as a plain alias, with no extra conditions.
This star controls Eating God. The Sanming Tonghui says: "Eating God fears the Owl; when it meets the Owl, its food is taken." That is why the nickname so often comes up with talk of stolen food.
The name sounds ominous, but the star itself is not bad. Whether it helps you depends on the whole chart.
Indirect Seal Personality: Intuition, Focus and Distance
People for whom this star stands out tend to trust their gut and like to work things out alone. These traits show more clearly when it sits on top of a pillar or appears in more than one place. It reads the same for men and women.
| Area | Tendency | When it goes too far |
|---|---|---|
| Learning | Self-taught; digs into niche or specialist fields | Loses interest fast and jumps between topics |
| Thinking | Sharp intuition; sees things from an unusual angle | Suspicious; slow to trust others |
| People | Independent; needs space of their own | Distant and withdrawn; keeps worries to themselves |
| Way of working | Focused; goes deep once hooked | Resists the usual way of doing things; clashes with the team |
At work, these people tend to suit roles that reward expertise and allow working alone. Examples include research, technical work, design, medicine, psychology and Chinese metaphysics.
Direct Seal vs Indirect Seal: What Is the Difference?
The difference is polarity. Both feed you, but the indirect one shares your yin-yang polarity and the direct one has the opposite.
| Aspect | Direct Seal | Indirect Seal |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity vs Day Master | Opposite | Same |
| Bing Fire example | Yi Wood | Jia Wood |
| Learning style | Formal courses; values degrees and credentials | Self-taught or niche; values mastery |
| Kind of support | Gentle care, like a teacher | More space than care; keeps some distance |
| When there is too much | Dependent, passive, slow to act | Suspicious, withdrawn, overthinks |
| How they count | Counted together as Seal, so they are favorable or unfavorable together | |
When Does the Owl Really Snatch the Eating God?
It takes three conditions at once; having the star alone does not count. Snatching the food (Xiao Shen Duo Shi) means this star holding Eating God down. The classics only say Eating God fears the Owl and list no conditions, so these three are Fortune Cloud's reading:
- Eating God helps youIt is one of your favorable elements. That only happens when you already have enough strength.
- Heavy, rooted Indirect SealThe star appears in more than one place and has a root. Rooted means a branch hides a stem of the same element.
- No Wealth starWealth stars control it. Without one in the chart, nothing keeps it in check.
When all three hold, it tends to show as plenty of ideas that never get said, and going back and forth on decisions. With one missing, the effect is lighter.
Is Indirect Seal Good or Bad? It Depends on Day Master Strength
When you need help, this star supports you; when you are already too strong, it becomes a burden. How much strength you have is called Day Master strength.
The element that helps you most is the Useful God (Yong Shen), and the next is a favorable element.
| Day Master | Role of Indirect Seal |
|---|---|
| Weak, heavy Officer | Seal comes first as the Useful God and turns the pressure of what controls you into support |
| Weak, heavy Output | Seal again comes first and restores the strength you spend on what you produce |
| Weak, heavy Wealth | Peers (your own element) come first; Seal is usually favorable and still helps |
| Strong | A hostile element; feeding you more only adds to the imbalance |
Both kinds of Seal count the same way here.
