Direct Seal (Zheng Yin) feeds your Day Master with the opposite yin-yang polarity. It stands for learning, support and security. It helps a weak chart and burdens a strong one.

What Does Direct Seal Mean, and How Do You Find It in Your Chart?

Direct Seal stands for learning, support and a sense of safety, including credentials and care from elders. BaZi uses your Day Master to stand for you. It is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born.

You relate to every other stem and branch in ten ways, called the Ten Gods. The element that feeds you is called Seal. If its polarity is opposite to yours, it is Direct Seal; if it matches, it is Indirect Seal.

For example, wood feeds fire. If you are Bing, which is yang fire, then yin wood is your Direct Seal and yang wood is your Indirect Seal.

Because the polarity is opposite, this support is gentle and steady.

Finding your own takes two steps:

  1. Enter your birth date and time in the free BaZi calculator to get your Four Pillars. The stem at the top of the day pillar is your Day Master.
  2. Find your Day Master in the Jia-to-Gui table to see which stem is your Direct Seal. If that stem sits on top of your year, month or hour pillar, you have one. It also counts when it is hidden inside a branch.

What Is the Direct Seal for Yi Wood? A Table for All Ten Day Masters

If you are Yi, which is yin wood, your Direct Seal is Ren, which is yang water. Otherwise, find your own row in the table.

Each branch also holds hidden stems, and the strongest one is its main qi. If your chart has a branch from the last column, this star shows more clearly.

Each line runs from a day master to the stem that is Direct Seal for it. The gold line starts at 甲 (Jia): for a 甲 day master, 癸 (Gui) is Direct Seal.

A Prominent Direct Seal: Security and Dependence

People with a prominent Direct Seal tend to be studious and steady, and happy to look after others. These traits show more clearly when it sits on top of a pillar or appears in more than one place. When there is too much of it, the same traits can turn into passivity and dependence.

AreaGood sideWhen there is too much
LearningLoves to learn; takes time to build skills and credentialsKeeps preparing and studying, but never starts
PeopleSteady and caring; looks after othersUsed to being looked after; asks for help first
SecurityValues stability; moods stay evenFears change; will not leave familiar ground
Way of workingCareful; thinks things through before actingSlow to act; opportunities slip away

At work, these people tend to suit places that reward expertise built up over time. Examples include teaching, research, medicine, publishing and licensed professions.

Direct Seal in the Year, Month, Day and Hour Pillars

The pillar it sits in shows who supports you and at what stage of life. The stem of the day pillar is you, so in the day pillar it can only sit in the branch.

PillarLife stage and peopleHow Direct Seal tends to read here
Year pillarFamily background, elders, early lifeCare and schooling from family or elders come more easily early on
Month pillarPeers, the years from school to working lifeTends to be backed by teachers or bosses; values degrees and qualifications
Day branchYourself and your partnerNeeds more inner security; wants to be understood and cared for in a close relationship
Hour pillarChildren, younger people, later lifeSupport shows up later; may also show as learning well into later life

On top of a pillar, it acts more directly. One hidden in a branch works more like a quiet sense of safety.

Weak Needs Seal, Strong Has Too Much: When Does Direct Seal Help?

If you are weak, Direct Seal usually helps; if you are strong, it becomes a burden. How much strength you have is called Day Master strength.

To judge it, look at the main qi of your four branches and count how many are Seal or share your own element. Two or more means strong; one or none means weak.

The elements that work for you are your favorable elements, and the most important one is the Useful God (Yong Shen).

If you are weak, check which is heaviest: Officer that controls you, Output that you produce, or Wealth that you control.

Your chartRole of Direct Seal
Weak, heavy OfficerFirst choice for Useful God; turns pressure into support
Weak, heavy OutputFirst choice for Useful God; reins in the drain on you
Weak, heavy WealthSecond choice; your own element comes first
StrongUnfavorable; feeding you more adds to the imbalance

When Officer pressure is heavy, Officer feeds the Seal and the Seal feeds you. Classical texts call this Officer and Seal feeding each other (Guan Yin Xiang Sheng). Indirect Seal counts the same way, so the two are favorable or unfavorable together.

What Does Wealth Damaging Seal Mean?

Wealth damaging Seal means a Wealth star controls your Seal and weakens its support. Wealth is the element you control, and it stands for money and practical matters. If you are Yi, earth is your Wealth and water is your Seal, and earth holds back water.

  • Weak, relying on Sealmoney matters tend to bring pressure and distraction, such as dropping a course to earn money.
  • Strong with heavy Sealit reins in the extra support and moves you from preparing to acting.

Common Misreadings of Direct Seal

This star only shows a tendency. It does not promise a degree, a backer or a good family life.

  1. "Direct Seal is the one lucky star." Whether it helps depends on whether it is favorable in your chart. If you are strong and have plenty of it, you tend to get stuck.
  2. "Lots of Seal means a high degree." It only means you value learning and qualifications. How far you go also depends on your setting, choices and effort.
  3. "Direct Seal means a close bond with your mother." The Six Relations (Liu Qin), an old way of matching the Ten Gods to family, assign it to the mother. A prominent one does not mean the bond is close, or that it is poor.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Direct Seal feeds you, while Direct Officer controls you, so they work in opposite directions. If you are Yi, your Direct Seal is Ren, yang water, and your Direct Officer is Geng, yang metal. Metal feeds water, so when both appear they are often read together.
It controls Hurting Officer, and classical texts call this Hurting Officer with Seal (Shang Guan Pei Yin). It tends to steer sharp self-expression toward study and professional credentials. When the Seal is too heavy, expression can turn cautious.
If you are weak, you tend to find support and a good time to study; if you are strong, you tend to settle into comfort. A Major Cycle is a ten-year stretch of luck, read mainly from its branch. So this cycle means ten years whose branch has Direct Seal as its main qi. The Ten Gods only describe tendencies. The real reading depends on your whole chart, and your own choices also shape the outcome.
