What Is Direct Officer, and How Do You Find It in Your Chart?
Direct Officer is the part of your chart that holds you in check and also backs you up. BaZi uses your Day Master to stand for you. It is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born.
The element that controls you is called Officer and Killings (Guan Sha). If its yin-yang polarity is opposite to yours, it is Direct Officer. If the polarity is the same, it is Seven Killings.
For example, metal controls wood. If you are Jia, which is yang wood, then yin metal is your Direct Officer and yang metal is your Seven Killings.
Because the polarity is opposite, this pressure is measured. It works like rules and promises: it holds you in, and it also holds you up.

Which Stem Is the Direct Officer for Each Day Master, Jia to Gui?
Each Day Master has exactly one Direct Officer, so find your row in the table. It is one of the Ten Gods, the ten ways your Day Master relates to every other stem and branch.
Each branch also holds hidden stems, and the strongest one is its main qi. The last column lists the branches whose main qi is your Direct Officer. If your chart has one of them, this star shows more clearly.

What Is Someone with a Prominent Direct Officer Like?
People with a prominent Direct Officer tend to follow the rules and keep their word. When it sits on top of a pillar as a visible stem, it is called revealed. When it is revealed, or appears in more than one place, these traits show more clearly. When it is too heavy for you to carry, they tend to go too far.

The pillar it sits in shows which people and which stage of life it touches. The stem of the day pillar is you, so in the day pillar it can only sit in the branch.

A Major Cycle (Da Yun) is a ten-year stretch of luck. An Annual Fortune (Liu Nian) is the luck of a single year. A hidden one often stays quiet until one of these brings its stem. Then the responsibility comes to the surface.
Strong or Weak Day Master: Is Direct Officer Help or Pressure?
If you are strong enough to carry it, Direct Officer helps. If not, it becomes pressure. How much strength you have is called Day Master strength. Judge that first. Then find the elements that bring your chart back into balance.
Elements that work for you are your favorable elements. Elements that cause the imbalance are unfavorable. Elements that are neither are idle.

Direct Officer vs Seven Killings: What Is the Difference?
The difference is polarity. Both control you, but Direct Officer has the opposite yin-yang polarity to yours and Seven Killings has the same.

Direct Officer with Direct Seal and Direct Wealth: How They Feed Each Other
They form a relay: your Direct Wealth feeds your Direct Officer, which feeds your Direct Seal, which feeds you. In the Five Elements, generating means one element feeds another.
For example, a Bing Fire Day Master has Gui Water as its Direct Officer, Yi Wood as its Direct Seal and Xin Metal as its Direct Wealth.

Whether these pairs help still depends on your strength. If you are strong, the Seal feeds you further and adds to the imbalance, so this pairing helps less. If you are weak and under heavy pressure, the Seal turns that pressure into support.
Three Common Misreadings of Direct Officer
Direct Officer shows a tendency. It does not promise status or an easy life.
- "Direct Officer means holding office." It describes how you relate to rules and responsibility. Public service is just one place where that shows. People without it can still run a team. People with it may choose freelance work.
- "The more Direct Officer, the better." The classic Sanming Tonghui says of it: "only one is allowed; more is unsuitable." In other words, one is enough, and more tends to hurt. When it appears again and again and you are weak, rules easily become a burden.
- "A Direct Officer means life will go smoothly." It is only one force in the chart. What matters is whether it is favorable for you, and how your luck unfolds over the decades and years.
