What the Parents Palace Shows: Parents, Elders, Bosses and Paperwork
The Parents Palace (Fu Mu Gong) shows how you get on with your parents, elders and bosses. It also covers study and paperwork.
Enter your birth time in the free Ziwei Doushu calculator and find your Life Palace, the cell labelled 命宮. The next cell clockwise is your Parents Palace, labelled 父母; the chart labels are in Chinese.
Major stars are the fourteen main stars of the chart, such as Ziwei and Tianfu. A palace with none of them is called an empty palace (Kong Gong).

Empty Parents Palace: Borrowing from the Health Palace, Not a Missing Bond
An empty Parents Palace borrows the major stars of the Health Palace directly opposite. Say the Health Palace holds Taiyang and Taiyin: read those two as if they sat here. You are still reading your ties with elders, not your health.
An empty palace only lacks a major star; it says nothing about how close you are. Every empty palace follows this rule, as an empty Life Palace does: borrow the major stars only.
With some Life Palace stars, this palace is always empty:
| Life Palace stars | Branch | Borrows |
|---|---|---|
| Ziwei | Zi (子) or Wu (午) | Tiantong and Jumen |
| Ziwei and Pojun | Chou (丑) or Wei (未) | Tiantong and Tianliang |
| Ziwei and Qisha | Si (巳) or Hai (亥) | Tiantong and Taiyin |
| Taiyang | Chen (辰) or Xu (戌) | Lianzhen and Tanlang |
| Lianzhen and Qisha | Chou (丑) or Wei (未) | Tianji and Taiyin |
| Lianzhen | Yin (寅) or Shen (申) | Tianji and Jumen |
| Lianzhen and Pojun | Mao (卯) or You (酉) | Tianji and Tianliang |
| Qisha | Zi (子) or Wu (午) | Taiyang and Taiyin |
| Pojun | Yin (寅) or Shen (申) | Taiyang and Tianliang |
The Parents Palace's Three Directions and Four Squares: Health, Children and Friends
Read this palace together with the Health, Children and Friends palaces. These are its Three Directions and Four Squares (San Fang Si Zheng): the four palaces you read together for any one palace.
| Role | Palace | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| This palace | Parents Palace | Parents, elders and bosses, and luck with study and paperwork |
| Opposite | Health Palace | Constitution, the body systems that carry strain first, and the mind-body link |
| Trine | Children Palace | Your bond with children, fertility, creative output, and juniors |
| Trine | Friends Palace | Friends, colleagues, staff and network |
This palace is the generation above you and the Children Palace the one below. The Friends Palace covers your peers and the people around you. How you treat elders often matches how you treat younger people and friends.
The 14 Major Stars in the Parents Palace: Elders and Bosses
The major star here roughly describes how you get on with elders and bosses. When two major stars share the palace, read both rows together. If the palace is empty, look up the borrowed stars.

|---|---|---|
| Ziwei | Parents with firm views; a strict upbringing | Likely to meet bosses with real clout |
| Tianji | Thoughtful parents; you may often live apart | Easy to talk to, but bosses change often |
| Taiyang | Warm parents who care about reputation | Bosses who promote you and praise you openly |
| Wuqu | Practical parents who say what they feel | Values results and plain talk |
| Tiantong | Gentle parents; a relaxed home | Easy to get along with; less pressure |
| Lianzhen | Parents with strong personalities; you often disagree | Friction when you disagree |

Study, Exams and Paperwork
Wenchang, Wenqu or Hua Ke (fame) in this palace tend to make study and exams go more smoothly. Teachers, examiners and the offices that issue certificates all count as people above you.
These two stars are tied to learning. They are not among the fourteen major stars:
- Wenchangstudy, exams and formal documents go more smoothly.
- Wenquspeaking and artistic talents shine, which helps in interviews and oral exams.

The Four Transformations in the Parents Palace
A transformation here adds help, control, a good name or worry to your ties with elders. The Four Transformations (Si Hua) are four tags, for wealth, power, fame and obstacle. The stem, one of ten Heavenly Stems, decides which stars they attach to. Every year has its own stem.
Three kinds are common, each active for a different span:
- Birth yearfrom your birth year's stem, active for life.
- Decade Cyclea ten-year stretch of your fortune, called Da Xian. Its transformations cover only that decade.
- Annual Fortunechanges every year and covers only that year.
| Transformation | Tendency here |
|---|---|
| Hua Lu | More care and help from elders and bosses |
| Hua Quan | Forceful parents or bosses who keep a close hand |
| Hua Ke | A good upbringing and good name; exams and licences go smoother |
| Hua Ji | Hard to let go of elders; you take their words to heart |
For example, when the stem is Ding, Jumen takes Hua Ji. Jumen rules speech, so here you and your elders or bosses tend to talk past each other. Writing important things down cuts down on misunderstandings.
