Where Is Your Life Palace? Finding It on Your Chart
Your Life Palace (Ming Gong) sits in a different cell for each person, set by your birth month and birth hour. It is the first of the twelve palaces and shows your basic temperament and pace.
Enter your birth time in the free Ziwei Doushu calculator and find the cell labelled 命宮; the chart labels are in Chinese. The major star in that cell is your life star. Major stars are the chart's fourteen main stars, such as Ziwei, Tianji and Taiyang.
Move the birth hour by one two-hour period, and the Life Palace moves by one cell. If you are unsure of your birth time, start with true solar time.

The Life Palace's Four Squares: Travel, Wealth and Career
Read the Life Palace together with the Travel, Wealth and Career palaces. The four make up its Three Directions and Four Squares (San Fang Si Zheng).
| Role | Palace | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| This palace | Life Palace | Temperament, working style and life direction |
| Opposite | Travel Palace | Life away from home, public image, opportunity and helpful people |
| Trine | Wealth Palace | How you earn, spend and think about money |
| Trine | Career Palace | How you work, the fields that suit you and the shape of your career |
The same person can act one way at home and another way out in the world. The palace directly opposite fills in that outside side.
The Wealth and Career palaces show how your temperament plays out in money and work.
Reading the Life Palace in Five Steps
You can read this palace in five steps, from its major star out to the palaces around it.
- Major starFirst see which major star sits in the palace. If there are two, read them as a pair.
- BrightnessNext check the star's brightness, meaning how strong it is. There are seven levels, from Temple (Miao), the strongest, down to Fallen (Xian), the weakest. The sixth level, Bu, means out of place, and it is not the same as Fallen.
- Birth-year transformationsSee which stars your birth year turns into Hua Lu (wealth), Hua Quan (power), Hua Ke (fame) or Hua Ji (obstacle). Together these are the Four Transformations (Si Hua).
- Helpful and harsh starsLook for the six benefic stars, which help, and the six malefic stars, which add friction. The benefic ones are Zuofu, Youbi, Wenchang, Wenqu, Tiankui and Tianyue. The malefic ones are Qingyang, Tuoluo, Huoxing, Lingxing, Dikong and Dijie.
- The other three palacesFinally, add the stars of those three palaces and read all four together.

Empty Life Palace: Four Rules for Borrowing from the Travel Palace
With no major star, the Life Palace borrows the major stars of the Travel Palace directly opposite. Borrowing follows four rules:
- Borrow only from the Travel Palace, not from the Wealth or Career palaces.
- A borrowed star keeps the brightness it has in its own palace. Some books weaken borrowed stars; we do not.
- If a borrowed star carries a birth-year transformation, that comes along too.
- Helpful and harsh stars in the empty palace itself still count.
The palace opposite an empty palace always holds two major stars. So you always borrow two and read them together.
An empty Life Palace does not mean a bad life. It means your temperament tends to adapt to your surroundings. A new place often brings a new way of doing things.
How Is the Life Palace Different from the Body Palace?
The Life Palace shows your inborn temperament, and the Body Palace shows where you put your effort as life goes on. The Body Palace (Shen Gong) is not a thirteenth palace but a marker placed on one of the twelve.
Which palace it marks depends only on your birth hour.
| Born between | Body Palace |
|---|---|
| 23:00–00:59 or 11:00–12:59 | Life Palace (same palace) |
| 01:00–02:59 or 13:00–14:59 | Fortune Palace |
| 03:00–04:59 or 15:00–16:59 | Career Palace |
| 05:00–06:59 or 17:00–18:59 | Travel Palace |
| 07:00–08:59 or 19:00–20:59 | Wealth Palace |
| 09:00–10:59 or 21:00–22:59 | Spouse Palace |
With the Body Palace on the Career Palace, your energy tends to go into work. When it sits on the Life Palace itself, your inborn and later directions agree, and your traits tend to stand out more.
Four Transformations in the Life Palace: Birth Year, Decade, Year
A transformation in the Life Palace adds one clear leaning to your personality. Transformations come from three sources, which differ in how long they last:
- Birth yearset by the year you were born, and stays with you for life.
- Decadechanges every ten years and covers only that decade. Each ten-year stretch is called a Decade Cycle (Da Xian).
- Yearchanges every year and covers only that year; see Annual Fortune.
| Transformation | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Hua Lu | Well liked, more openings, things go smoothly |
| Hua Quan | Strong-willed, wants control, suited to leading |
| Hua Ke | Cares about reputation, upright image, meets helpful people |
| Hua Ji | Holds on tight and expects a lot of yourself, but focuses well |
Four Common Misreadings of the Life Palace
This palace describes tendencies; it does not rank people.
- "The Life Palace is the Ziwei star." The palace is a position, and Ziwei is a star. Ziwei can land in any of the twelve palaces.
- "Some major stars are good and some are bad." Every major star has strengths and things to watch.
- "An empty Life Palace means an empty life." It only means that cell has no major star. The borrowed stars still describe your personality.
- "The Life Palace decides your whole life." It is read with the palaces around it, the transformations and the ten-year cycles. One palace alone settles nothing.
