What Tianji is, and which palace it sits in
Tianji is one of the fourteen major stars, and it stands for thinking, planning and change. Wherever it sits, you tend to think and plan more about that part of life.
A chart has twelve cells, called palaces. Each palace covers one area of life. The Life Palace is the cell about you.

Tianji's element, its place in the Southern Dipper, and what it rules
Tianji's element is Wood, and it is the third star of the Southern Dipper. It rules thinking, adapting and siblings. That grouping comes from old texts, and it does not change how you read a chart.
Wood grows, and it bends to follow its surroundings. That is why the star stands for change and growth. The Complete Book of Ziwei Doushu calls Tianji the "ruler of siblings," so it is also tied to brothers, sisters and peers.
Tianji's brightness in the twelve branches
Tianji is strongest in Zi and Wu, at Temple, and weakest in Chou and Wei, where it is Fallen. Each of the twelve cells is marked with an Earthly Branch, running from Zi to Hai. Brightness says how freely a star works in that cell.
There are seven levels. The strongest is Temple and the weakest is Fallen, with five steps in between: Prosperous, Gaining Ground, Beneficial, Neutral and Not Gaining Ground.
At Temple, you tend to think flexibly and have plenty of ideas. At Fallen, you tend to think a lot but find it hard to settle.
Personality with Tianji in the Life Palace
With Tianji in the Life Palace, you tend to be quick and eager to learn, and you like a plan before you act. How this plays out also depends on the Three Directions and Four Squares (San Fang Si Zheng). That is the group of four palaces you read together, starting from your own.
Where you tend to shine
- You learn new things fast and get to the point quickly.
- You plan well and often have a backup ready.
- You adapt easily, so a new setting rarely throws you.
Where you tend to get stuck
- You think a lot, so small things can make you anxious.
- With many options, deciding gets hard.
- You change direction often, so plans may go unfinished.
Tianji's Life Palace pairings: with Taiyin, Jumen, Tianliang, or alone
There are six pairings, set by the branch of the palace. In three, another major star shares the palace, and in the other three Tianji sits alone. "Sharing the palace" means sitting in the same cell, and the opposite palace is the cell directly across:

Yin and Shen: Tianji with Taiyin
It shares the palace with Taiyin. You tend to be thoughtful and sensitive, and you keep most of your ideas to yourself.
Mao and You: Tianji with Jumen
It shares the palace with Jumen. You tend to speak well and dig to the bottom of things. You may also overthink or get into arguments.
Chen and Xu: Tianji with Tianliang
It shares the palace with Tianliang. You tend to analyze well, and you like to give advice.
Zi–Wu, Chou–Wei, Si–Hai: Tianji alone
It is the only major star in the palace. Across from it sit Jumen, Tianliang and Taiyin, in that order. It thinks most freely in Zi and Wu, where it is strongest, and hesitates more in Chou and Wei, where it is weakest.
Ji Yue Tong Liang is a group name for four stars: Tianji, Taiyin, Tiantong and Tianliang. It only groups stars of a similar nature. It is not a named pattern.
Which years Tianji takes Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji
Tianji takes Hua Lu in years ending in 5, Hua Quan in 6, Hua Ke in 7 and Hua Ji in 8. By Heavenly Stem, these are the Yi, Bing, Ding and Wu years.
The Four Transformations (Si Hua) are four ways a star can change: Hua Lu (wealth), Hua Quan (power), Hua Ke (fame) and Hua Ji (obstacle). For example, someone born in 1985 has Tianji with Hua Lu. If you were born before Lunar New Year, count the previous year.
With the power transformation, you tend to hold firmer views, and your plans move forward more easily. With the fame one, you tend to earn recognition for your ideas and skills. Each ten-year Decade Cycle (Da Xian) and each single year can also give Tianji a transformation.
