Jumen Star

Jumen rules speech and analysis, and old texts rank it as the second star of the Northern Dipper. In whichever part of your chart it sits, you tend to ask more, say more and doubt more about that side of life.

A chart has twelve cells, called palaces, and each covers one area of life. The Life Palace is the cell about you. When the star sits there, this is called Jumen in the Life Palace.

In feng shui, "Two Black Jumen" belongs to a separate set of nine stars. It has nothing to do with this star.

The star is brightest in Yin, Mao, Shen and You, and dimmest in Chen and Xu. Each cell of the chart is marked with an Earthly Branch, running from Zi to Hai. Brightness says how freely a star works in that cell, on seven levels from Temple down to Fallen.

When it is bright, your words tend to carry weight and your analysis rests on evidence. When it is dim, you are more prone to suspicion, and you may say things at the wrong moment.

With this star in your Life Palace, you tend to be articulate and observant, and you want to get to the bottom of things. How this plays out also depends on the Three Directions and Four Squares (San Fang Si Zheng). That is the group of four palaces you read together, starting from your own.

Where you tend to shine

• You speak clearly and are good at persuading people.
• You spot flaws, which suits research and fact-checking.

Where you tend to get stuck

• You can be too blunt, and a careless remark may hurt someone.
• You like to argue, so small things can grow into disputes.

There are six pairings, set by the branch of your Life Palace. In three of them the star shares the cell with another major star. In the other three it sits alone. The opposite palace is the cell directly across.

Chou and Wei: Jumen with Tiantong

It shares the palace with Tiantong. You tend to be soft-hearted and think a lot, and you may keep your feelings bottled up.

Yin and Shen: Jumen with Taiyang

It shares the palace with Taiyang. Your words tend to carry weight, and you are willing to lay things out in the open.

Mao and You: Jumen with Tianji

It shares the palace with Tianji. You tend to be quick-witted and well-spoken, and you may overthink.

Zi and Wu, Chen and Xu, Si and Hai: Jumen alone

No other major star shares the cell. Zi and Wu are where the jade pattern below can form. Chen and Xu are its dimmest spots, so watch your words even more there.

Jumen takes Hua Lu (wealth) in Xin years, Hua Quan (power) in Gui years and Hua Ji (obstacle) in Ding years. It never takes Hua Ke (fame). These are the Four Transformations (Si Hua), four ways a star can change with the year.

A birth year ending in 1, such as 1981, is a Xin year. One ending in 3 is Gui, and one ending in 7 is Ding. If you were born before Lunar New Year, count the previous year.

In a wealth year, your way with words tends to bring chances. In a power year, your words carry more weight. In an obstacle year, the palace the star sits in is more prone to misunderstandings and gossip.

Each ten-year Decade Cycle (Da Xian) and each single year can also give the star a transformation. Some sites say it takes the obstacle one in Ren years. In the traditional table, though, that one goes to Wuqu in Ren years.

The star in Zi or Wu counts as Jade Hidden in Stone (Shi Zhong Yin Yu) only when all three of these hold:

• Your Life Palace is in Zi or Wu, and the star sits in it.
• The four key palaces hold Lucun, or the star takes the wealth or power transformation.
• They hold none of the six malefic stars, and no obstacle transformation.

Lucun is a star of wealth and reward. The six malefic stars are Qingyang, Tuoluo, Huoxing, Lingxing, Dikong and Dijie. All the transformations here count only from your birth year.

The name means jade hidden inside a stone. Your talent tends to stay hidden at first and show later.

Wherever the star sits, that area of life tends to bring more discussion and more disputes.
